GAUTRAIN

GAUTRAIN — for those planning a quick trip to downtown Johannesburg (or “Jo’burg”, as the locals like to say), the city’s trendy Rosebank neighborhood, the airport and other area cities like Sandton and Pretoria, visitors can take South Africa’s Gautrain high-speed train.

Unlike other forms of public transit, Gautrain provides camera surveillance, South African railway police patrols (to deal with the city’s crime) and additional security officers at every Gautrain station, making it reliable and safe to ride. It’s also very fast – with travel times between stations ranging from four to 10 minutes – and offers a convenient direct route from O. R. Tambo International Airport to two Sandton Gautrain stations – Sandton and Marlboro – which are less than 15 miles outside of downtown Jo’burg.

Train fares vary depending on the distance and time you travel, but expect to pay R18 to R65 rand ($1.21 to $4.40) per ride or R142 to R164 rand ($9.61 to $11.10) for each trip to and from the airport. More details at: www.gautrain.co.za
