BUS – in recent years, Johannesburg has been phasing in a new public transportation bus system, with routes going to various parts of the city and outerlying areas (from Eldorado Park to Ellis Park East and elsewhere). The service is called Rea Vaya, and has a fare system which progressively increases according to distance. For example, the fare for a bus ride of up to 5 km. in distance is R8 (or US$.54 cents), a bus ride of up to 15 km. is R11.80 (US$.79 cents) and a ride of up to 35 km. is R15 (US$1.01). Rea Vaya happens to have routes that would be of interest to tourists wanting to visit various points of interest (especially those connected to the country’s recent history). Visitors can use these buses to see various sightseeing destinations like: Constitution Hill, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Origins Centre, Planetarium, Museum Africa, and Sci-Bono Discover Centre.
